Equitation Trainer
Equitation is all about the rider. In equitation on the flat and over fences, the classes are solely judged on the rider’s ability to finesse the challenges in the arena. With judges, there are an abundance of ways to gain faults- even the horse you’re sitting on can lower your ranking.
Equitation flat classes comprise of several riders in the arena following instructions of a judge. Then, there is equitation over fences: hunter seat and jump seat equitation. In hunt seat equitation, or “medal” classes, the riders complete a hunter course as smooth and effortless as possible. In jump seat equitation, riders complete a course of jumps and track that resembles a jumper course. The purpose of equitation is to show off the rider’s proper position and riding style.
Any age group can participate in equitation. All divisions are divided into juniors (under 18) and adult amateurs.
Position and style are the most important components of equitation. Riders need to not only demonstrate their ability to complete the challenges in the area, but also need to accomplish them with great finesse and a strong control of their form as well as their horse’s.
Trainers who specialize in Equitation need to be open to traveling to national shows if their rider desires to pursue equitation. Equitation riders cannot progress in equitation by just going to county shows because they do not offer advanced classes including hunter seat and jump seat equitation. Trainers that teach equitation also need to have years of experience in the hunter ring since hunter and equitation events stem from the same type of riding and rider often show in both disciplines. They should understand what is required of both the horse and rider to be successful in equitation events.
